Thanks, MD, for this informative article. It opened my eyes to the true meaning of "a good, clean shot". Too bad you cannot put this out in the tube, more people need to hear/read it. I certainly agree that the M-1 Garand was/is a fine weapon. My comment is related to the fact that many today do not live in the wide open spaces where 300-600 yards or more sight distance is likely when acquiring targets.

Due to urban environments where most live, having ability to see targets in excess of 200 yards is rare. The M-1 Carbine should not be overlooked as a defensive firearm, nor should various other AR-15 type rifles be overlooked. Even pistol caliber carbines are available that are well suited for urban dwellers.

I agree that if you are faced with need to hunt large game animals for food, the M-1 Garand or similar high powered rifle is best choice.
