Raising Pigs: Pros and Cons

I blame Craigslist.

A year ago we added a new adventure to our lives when we responded to an ad on Craigslist and went to pick up three cute, squealing, pink pigs from a nearby farm to add to our homestead. While we have thoroughly enjoyed having pigs on our little farm and having the pork in the freezer, owning pigs isn’t for everyone. Here are some pros and cons to consider before you make the leap into raising pigs.

Any time I have to install anything to watch or observe any internet item, I immediately bail, since there is never a reason to install any proprietary code to perform normal internet activities. I have enough junk code running on most of my machines already, so this does not serve you well in gaining readership.
Additionally the comment text boxes and lack of formatting on this site does not serve you well either, and you would do well to use the methods and functions like those on your other site.

      Charles,

I’ve raised pigs for the freezer twice. I didn’t find them “cute, clean OR very intelligent!” My favorite day was the day they went for processing. Unfortunately, the guy who processed the first 2 wasn’t available to process the second two and I believe the second processor switched our pigs for nasty wild hogs because they tasted horrible….no more pigs around here! Now, if the first guy would be in the processing business again, I’d be tempted. BUT, pigs do stink so keeping them far, far away from the house is a must.
